Carl’s Water Story

After his father was killed in a farming accident, Carl and his mother continued to live on the farm in south-central Kansas.

One day after school his mother asked Carl to turn on the faucet in the kitchen sink.

Out came a pressurized stream of sand mixed with water. What happened?

Our neighbors had drilled irrigation wells and drained the aquifer supplying our house.

At that moment Carl became aware that the surrounding environment was more important than he had realized. He became a strong advocate of water resource management in that moment and has continued to work to protect important watersheds.

The story has a relatively happy end. Our neighbors, including the irrigators, helped drill a new house well.

In the meantime, we borrowed two hand pumps and pulled water out of two stock wells.

Carl hopes to never have to hand pump water again.
